Using Password Manager

Password Manager is a web-based service for staff, all staff can use this to change their password.

  • Manage My Passwords to change your password if you know your current password or if it has expired

Activate Password Manager

In order to use all the functions of the service you must activate Password Manager
To activate Password Manager you need to create a 'Questions and Answers Profile'.

Before you start here are some things you should note:
  • You will need your network login password to activate Password Manager
  • The answers are case sensitive. This is particularly important when entering names.
  • You should try to choose questions where the answers are unlikely to change
  • You cannot provide the same answer to more than one question

Steps to activate Password Manager:

Here are the steps required to activate Password Manager:

  1. Browse to the Password Manager login page at https://password.tcd.ie.

  2. Enter your username (do not include @tcd.ie) and under Select location: select either COLLEGE or FIRST.
    Most Trinity accounts are in the COLLEGE domain. Only those staff who normally log on to FIRST should select that option.

  4. Click My Questions and Answers Profile and type your network login password when prompted.
  5. If you do not know your current network login password, you will need to come to the IT Service Desk with your current ID card and we can reset your password here.

  6. Enter your answers to a set of four security questions. Two of these questions are set and you may choose which other two questions to provide an answer for. You will be asked to provide the answers to some of these questions if you ever forget your password or if your account becomes locked out.

  7. Click Finish.

Changing Your Network Login Password

You can change your network login password if you know your current password or if your password has expired.

Good to know:
  • You can only change your password once every 24 hours.
  • You do not have to be registered with password manager to change your network login password.
  • There are also other methods of changing your network login password.

Steps to change your password with Password Manager:


  1. Browse to the TCD Password Manager login page at https://password.tcd.ie.

  2. Enter your username (do not include @tcd.ie) and under Select location: select either COLLEGE or FIRST.
    Most Trinity accounts are in the COLLEGE domain. Only those staff who normally log on to FIRST should select that option.
    Click OK.

  3. Click Manage My Passwords

  4. Type your current network login password

  5. Type and confirm your new network login password. Click Next to proceed.

  6. You should get a message to say “Your password was successfully changed”.

Steps to reset a forgotten password with Password Manager:


  1. Browse to the TCD Password Manager login page at https://password.tcd.ie.

  2. Enter your username (do not include @tcd.ie) and under Select location: select either COLLEGE or FIRST.
    Most Trinity accounts are in the COLLEGE domain. Only those staff who normally log on to FIRST should select that option.
    Click OK.

  3. Select Forgot My Password from the list of options.

  4. Enter the answers to displayed set of questions, which you have provided answers for previously. Click Next.

  5. Type and confirm your new network login password. Click Next to proceed.

Unlocking Your Account

Good to know:
  • This is the only self-service method you can use to unlock your network account.
  • If you have registered for this service by activating it, you can use it to unlock your account. (This option only appears when your account has been locked out)
  • If you have not registered for this service then you can come in person to the IT Service Desk on the ground floor of Áras an Phiarsaigh and we will unlock your account here. Remember to bring your valid staff card.

  1. Browse to the TCD Password Manager login page at https://password.tcd.ie.

  2. Enter your username (do not include @tcd.ie) and under Select location: select either COLLEGE or FIRST.
    Most Trinity accounts are in the COLLEGE domain. Only those staff who normally log on to FIRST should select that option.
    Click OK.

  3. Click Unlock My Account.

  4. Enter the answers to displayed set of questions, which you have provided answers for previously.

  5. Click Next to proceed.

  6. You should now receive a message to say "Your account was successfully unlocked".

What passwords can I change using Password Manager?

Password Manager allows you to manage your Trinity network login password. Staff use this password to access their Trinity email account. This password is also needed when using online services like my.tcd.ie, Library services and Blackboard Learn (mymodule.tcd.ie)

Which passwords can you not change using Password Manager

Trinity webauthors who edit the content of www.tcd.ie websites must note that their webauthor account password cannot be changed using Password Manager

Which domain should I pick when logging into the Password Manager service – 'College' or 'First'?

Most Trinity users' accounts are in the COLLEGE.tcd.ie domain. Only users from FSD who normally log in to FIRST.tcd.ie should choose that option.

Are there any requirements that must be met when creating a new Trinity network login password?

Yes, any password you set with Password Manager must follow these rules:

  • must be at least 8 characters long
  • must have a mix of upper and lowercase characters
  • must include at least one numeric character OR a special character such as ! @ $ % * _ - + = ~
  • must not include £ € : ? | space
  • must not include part of your first name, last name or username
  • must not be the same as any of your previous 24 passwords
  • can only be changed once in any 24 hour period

Can I use the Password Manager from a computer which is not on the Trinity network?

Yes. Password Manager can be accessed from any computer with internet access at https://password.tcd.ie. It allows you to change your Trinity network login password or unlock your account remotely.

I am having difficulties providing answers to the questions in the Q&A profile.

The answers policy requires that your answers must be unique i.e. all different, they must all be at least 4 characters in length, and they must not contain parts of the corresponding question.

Where are the answers to the questions in my Q&A profile stored?

The answers are securely stored in an encrypted format on an on-campus server managed by IT Services.

What happens if I enter the answers incorrectly when I am trying to change my password or unlock my account?

You are allowed 3 chances to enter your answers correctly. For reasons of security, at the third incorrect attempt your Questions & Answers profile will be locked out and you will need to call to the IT Service Desk in person with your current Trinity ID card in order to have it unlocked. The questions will not change from attempt to attempt.

Why are some options listed under 'Disabled Tools'

Some tools which appear under 'Disabled Tools' may not appropriate to your current account status or the current status of your network login password. This may be the case if your Trinity network login password has expired.
