How often do I need to change my network login password?

Your network login password expires every 190 days.

Will I be notified that my network login password is due to expire?

All staff are notified by email 14-16 days in advance of the date that their network login password will expire and are directed to change the network login password.

How do I reset an expired password?

There are several ways in which you can reset an expired password. Please visit our 'reset an expired password' knowledge base entry.

How can I set a secure password?

Please see our IT Security advice on setting a strong password. Please also be aware of the password rules:

  • must be at least 8 characters long
  • must have a mix of upper and lowercase characters
  • must include at least one numeric character OR a special character such as ! @ $ % * _ - + = ~
  • must not include £ € : ? | space
  • must not include part of your first name, last name or username
  • must not be the same as any of your previous 24 passwords
  • can only be changed once in any 24 hour period

Does this affect my computer account?

Password expiry does not relate to computer account expiry i.e. if your password expires there is no adverse effect on your email or computer account - you simply have to set a new network login password to regain access to all your IT facilities.

Why do we have password expiry policy?

Passwords are often stolen without the knowledge of the victim. For instance, as a result of a phishing email or through malware. Very often stolen passwords are not used immediately. If you change your password periodically, even if your password is somehow stolen, the thief does not have the opportunity to use it. Changing password every six months also minimises chances of any 'brute-force' attack.

Webauthor account password expiry

A webauthor account is only used by staff and postgraduates who are responsible for managing Trinity websites. To ensure a high level of security on the Trinity web server, users' webauthor account passwords expire every 180 days. See our page on how to set a new webauthor password if it has expired.
