Taught Programme Scholarships and Awards

ISE Trust Scholarships

The Irish School of Ecumenics Trust has instituted a postgraduate scholarship in each M. Phil. programme. One scholarship will be awarded to an exceptionally well-qualified candidate in each of the three taught M. Phil. programmes: International Peace Studies, Inter Cultural Theology and Interreligious Studies, and Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation.

VALUE: €3800 for Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation; €3800 for Inter Cultural Theology and Interreligious Studies; €6500 for International Peace Studies. Students should note that these Scholarships are only likely to cover part of the total cost for fees and living expenses and applicants are therefore encouraged to explore additional sources of funding as well.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all full time applicants on each of the three taught M. Phil. programmes. The Scholarship in International Peace Studies is normally awarded to an international student from the Global South.

The Boris Trajkovski Scholarship

Instituted by The Irish School of Ecumenics Trust, the Boris Trajkovski Scholarship will be awarded annually to a student from the Balkans region to undertake a taught Master’s programme in International Peace Studies, Inter Cultural Theology and Interreligious Studies, or Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation. The scholarship is made possible through the generosity of the Methodist Church in Britain, in the spirit of ecumenical partnership. This scholarship is open to Christians of all denominations who can demonstrate a commitment to the vision and mission of the Methodist Church Fund for World Mission, (the promoter of the scholarship).  It is intended to support the ongoing work of reconciliation in the region by providing the opportunity for individuals who have been involved in ecumenical, inter-faith, reconciliation or peace work to undertake a 1-year taught masters degree in the Irish School of Ecumenics. 

VALUE:  €30,000, from which university fees and a stipend will be paid.  

ELIGIBLITY: Open to full time M. Phil. applicants on any of the ISE’s taught M. Phil. programmes  from the following qualifying countries: Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovia, Croatia (Eastern), Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Bulgaria.

Columbanus Scholarship

The Columbanus Scholarship is awarded to an exceptionally well qualified candidate on the M. Phil. in Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation taught at our Belfast school, and is made possible by the generosity of the Columbanus Community Trust Fund.  Columbanus, a peace building community based for many years at 683 Antrim Road, was established by the founder of the Irish School of Ecumenics, Father Michael Hurley SJ. The availability of this scholarship is reviewed annually. Students should note that this Scholarship is only likely to cover part of the total cost for fees and living expenses and applicants are therefore encouraged to explore additional sources of funding as well
ELIGIBILITY: Open to full time applicants on the M. Phil. in Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation.

Columbanus Bursaries for Students from Northern Ireland
These small awards are made to students on the M. Phil. in Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation who are residents of Northern Ireland and are a one-off award given in the first year of study only. They are made possible by the generosity of the Columbanus Community Trust Fund.
VALUE: Decided on an annual basis – usually a few hundred pounds.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all applicants to the M. Phil. in Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation who are residents of Northern Ireland.

Postgraduate Ussher Fellowships

Fellowships are available to new entrants to the full-time Ph.D. register for entry in October and/or the following April of the same academic year (e.g. October 09 and/or April 10). The Fellowships aim to support and develop gifted research students. They are awarded competitively on academic merit.
VALUE: The Fellowship fully covers EU and non-EU fees and provides an annual maintenance of €16,000 for three years.

ELIGIBILITY: These fellowships are only applicable to new entrants on the research register.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Students in receipt of this award are required to maintain satisfactory progress in their research degree. There is no teaching requirement associated with this award.

APPLICATION: New entrants to the Research Register do not need to complete a separate Award application form. A section on the general Research application form must be completed in order to be considered for an award.

Postgraduate Research Studentships

Studentships are available to new entrants as well as continuing students on the full-time Ph.D. register for entry in October and/or the following April of the same academic year (e.g. September 09 and/or March 10). The Studentships aim to support and develop gifted research students. They are awarded competitively on academic merit.

VALUE: The studentship fully covers EU or non-EU fees and an annual maintenance of €8,000 for up to four years.

ELIGIBILITY: These studentships are applicable to new entrants as well as continuing students on the Ph.D. Register.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Students in receipt of this award are required to maintain satisfactory progress in their research degree. In addition to their research studies, students holding this award are also expected to contribute six hours of academic work per week for the School, as agreed with the Director of Postgraduate Teaching and Learning.

APPLICATION: New entrants to the Research Register are not required to complete a separate Award application form. A section on the general Research application form must be completed in order to be considered for an award.  Continuing students who wish to apply for this Award should contact the research degrees Executive Officer directly, ressec@tcd.ie.

CLOSING DATE: Nominations are considered at various times of the year depending on the School. New applicants are advised to submit their application as early as possible.
