The Postgraduate Diploma in Conflict and Dispute Resolution Studies provides a thoroughly enjoyable introduction to the world of conflict resolution. The course engages with a wide variety of subjects, marrying both theory and practice. In the first term, we dealt with a diverse range of subjects – religious motivations in US foreign policy, gender identity in conflict and UNSCR 1325, the role of the European Union as a peace-builder in Northern Ireland, Cyprus and Yugoslavia, workplace conflict and leadership in conflict – all of which provided a useful overview into how we understand, as well as treat conflict situations.
In the second term, the focus was more practical. Our attention turned to alternative dispute resolution and the skills which accompany these approaches. We learned about conflict personality types, arbitration, restorative practices, negotiation and mediation. One of the most valuable aspects of this course was its emphasis on developing practical skills, most notably as mediators in workplace or commercial conflicts. The small class size (12) offered two clear advantages for assisting in this. First, it gave an excellent opportunity to hone these skills by allowing for regular participation and interactive role-plays. Secondly, it provided us with the chance to challenge, question and learn from experts in these fields. The hard-work, interest and individual attention shown by staff at the Irish School of Ecumenics made this year an extremely enjoyable and richly rewarding one.
