International Peace Studies

Ireland is increasingly recognised as a world-leader in the scholarship and practice of peacebuilding. ISE’s International Peace Studies programme is the longest-running of its kind on the island. Our students are immersed in a cutting-edge programme of study that examines the causes and consequences of war and armed conflict, with a view to understanding how to achieve sustainable peace. Courses draw on perspectives from politics and political science, international relations, ethics and conflict resolution, allowing students to engage critically with the social, political and economic issues associated with peace and violence.

Scholars teaching on our International Peace Studies programme are well-known within Ireland and internationally for bringing an ethical perspective to bear on issues of war and peace. Following their areas of expertise, students may specialise in the areas of ‘Ethics in International Affairs’, ‘International Politics’ or ‘Peacebuilding and Development.’ Based at our Milltown campus, International Peace Studies students are also offered a week-long intensive course in mediation skills.
