Dr Lucas Chan

Lucas (Yiu Sing Luke) Chan, S.J., a native Hong Kong Chinese, is the Michael Hurley, S.J., Postdoctoral Fellow for 2013-14. He has taught at the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, a graduate school of Santa Clara University. He received three MA degrees from the UK (Education Management), the Philippines (Theology), and the United States (Moral Theology). He later gained his Ph.D. in Theological Ethics at Boston College, USA, under the mentorship of Catholic ethicist Professor James F. Keenan, Scripture scholar Professor Daniel Harrington, and feminist scholar Professor Lisa Sowle Cahill. In 2010-11, he received two year-long Fellowships from Yale University and Georgetown University.

Over the years, he has served, studied, and received his training in various parts of the world, including Singapore, Britain, Ireland, Cambodia, Macau, the Philippines, United States, Italy, and Germany. While living in the United States, he served as a consultant to the Bioethics Committees of two hospitals in Boston. Since 2005, he has served as a member of the Planning Committee for the two international Catholic Theological Ethics in the World Church (CTEWC) conferences held in Padova and Trent, Italy, in 2006 and 2010 respectively. He is currently the Chair of CTEWC’s Asian Regional Committee and a member of the editorial board of Asian Horizons, a Catholic theology journal in India. In 2015, as the Chair of the Asian regional committee, he will be hosting the first ever pan-Asian Catholic Theological Ethics conference in Bangalore, India. Dr. Chan has published two course adoption books in the United States on biblical ethics. He will be co-editing a book on The Bible and Catholic Theological Ethics in the World Church, and teaching an intensive course in India.
