How to apply
Application Form
Before applying for admission as an Erasmus student
- Please ensure that your university has a Erasmus Exchange agreement with Trinity College
- Please ensure that you have been nominated by your university to participate in the exchange.
- It is essential that you have an excellent command of the English language, both written and verbal.
Please complete the application form (PDF 112 kB)for Admission as an EU Exchange Student. Please read the instructions on the last page of the application form carefully before completing it. If you would like us to acknowledge your application form, complete the self-addressed letter at the end of the application form. It is very important that you enclose a transcript of your results from your home university with your application, we cannot process your application without this transcript. The completed application form must be sent by post directly to:

Students coming to study at Trinity College through the Erasmus Programme do not pay tuition fees.
When will I receive my letter of acceptance?
Letters of acceptance will be posted during July and August to students commencing their studies in September, and in November to students commencing their studies in January. An information pack will be sent to you electronically at the same time as your letter of acceptance, so it is important that you write your email address very clearly on your application form.
What should I do if I must withdraw from the Erasmus Programme?
If you can not take up the Erasmus place offered to you, it is most important that you advise the Study Abroad desk immediately at the following address international@tcd.ie.
Students with Disabilities
Erasmus Students with a disability are encouraged to contact the Trinity College Disability Service disab@tcd.ie. The Student Disability Service is the support service for students with disability or special learning difficulties. Students requiring support from Trinity College due to the impact of their disability or specific learning difficulty are advised to contact the Service as early as possible to explore what supports can be provided.
Please note that Trinity College is unable to accept 'free-movers' under the Erasmus programme.
Academic requirements
Modules choices
The selection of modules which students will follow, the form of assessment expected, and the form in which results are returned to the home university are determined between participating Faculties or Departments. Each student must complete a Learning Agreement, signed by both the home university and Trinity College. Please note that acceptance of your application does not guarantee acceptance into particular modules listed on your application. This may be for one of the following reasons:
- Because you have the possibility to take a module combination which is not available to home students, it is likely that some of the module choices that you make will result in timetable clashes, so obliging you to make alternative choices
- The module for which you have applied may be over-subscribed.
- In consultation with the department in which you wish to take a module, it is deemed that you do not have the necessary background to successfully complete the module;
You will be required to make a final choice of modules after you have registered in September (or early January for students coming in the second semester). Your Department Erasmus Coordinator will be able to give you advice about your module choices.

How many ECTS must I take?
At Trinity College, 60 ECTS is the equivalent of a full year's work-load. All full-year Erasmus students are required to take a minimum of 45 ECTS. One semester students are expected to take 20-30 ECTS. Modules at Trinity will have a 5, 10 or 15 ECTS value depending on the length of the module and the number of hours. As an Erasmus student, you must complete all assessments, examinations, and laboratory work, associated with each module for which you are registered.
The academic year is currently two semesters: Michaelmas Term - 1st Semester (September to December), Hilary Term and Trinity Term - 2nd Semester (January to May). The examination periods runs for 4 weeks in Trinity Term ending in mid May. Please see the Term dates document for more information.
What is ECTS?
The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a student-centred system based on student workload. ECTS makes study programmes easy to read and compare for all students. The System facilitates the recognition of periods of study abroad.
Transcripts
The Study Abroad desk processes exam results attained by Erasmus and other exchange students, non-EU visiting and EU visiting students. The transcripts of those results are then forwarded directly to the student's home university, usually during the summer months. Students attending for Michaelmas Term only will have transcripts issued during the month of February. Results for Erasmus Students are not available on the university website. Unfortunately, it is not possible to give results by phone or email. Please see the Grading systems and transcripts document for more information.
