Advertising a vacancy
The Hiring Leader, in consultation with the Dean of the Faculty concerned, is responsible for the preparation of the advertisement and further particulars for the post. Templates for adverts and further particulars are available below.
Whilst having due regard to advertising costs, all academic and senior management positions will be advertised internationally, to attract the most suitable and qualified candidates. For reasons of efficiency and effectiveness, candidates may be requested to submit a CV and covering letter, or a personal information summary. To increase the quality of application information under review, it may be necessary to request other pertinent material such as sample publications, research plans, etc.
The closing date for applications will be agreed between the Human Resources Department and the hiring School / Area. For academic appointments, which require an international search, 6 weeks is considered a norm. Otherwise, closing dates are generally three weeks from date of advertisement. An interview date or dates must be agreed with the Human Resources Department for presentations, interviews and/or assessment activities and ideally should be included in the advertisement for the post.
Certain grades of post must go through an internal competition first. A list of all grades and the advertising requirements are available below.
Research appointments fund their own advertising, and costings can be obtained for publications upon request from the Recruitment section. PI’s are encouraged to liaise with the Human Resources Department to ensure that their advertisements follow best practice guidelines and also appear on as many appropriate media as possible.
