Drawing on both historical and archaeological evidence, this module examines the history of Dublin in the Viking era. Among the topics covered are: Dublin’s foundation as a Viking base in 841; early topographical and socio-economic developments in the Viking town (including slavery); the emergence of the Hiberno-Scandinavian city-state of Fine Gall; its place in the body politic of native Ireland; and its overseas links.

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
- Analyse the political and social developments associated with early medieval Dublin
- Identify and locate for relevant secondary literature
- Engage with relevant archaeological, theoretical and critical approaches to the history of early medieval Dublin
- Apply different techniques of evaluation and interpretation to relevant primary sources
- Critique relevant historiography in the light of study of primary sources
- Present and discuss analysis of questions relating to the history of early medieval Dublin
- Analyse the impact of the Vikings on the development of early medieval Dublin
