HI2120 Medieval and Post Medieval Archaeology

Module Organiser: Dr. Steven Harrison
Duration: Oct-Dec
Contact hours: 1 lecture per week and 4 seminars (weeks 8-11)
Weighting: 5 ECTS
Assessment: 50% continuous assessment, 50% annual exam

Archaeological evidence is playing an increasingly important role in ‘historical’ interpretations of the medieval and post-medieval periods, not just in Ireland but further afield. This process has been driven both by the recovery of new evidence and by the development of new techniques and methods for interpreting that evidence. The long-standing use of archaeological data to provide evidence for trade and economic activity has been joined by studies of material culture which emphasis its use in exploring themes such as ethnicity, status, gender roles and power relations. These approaches can supplement, or even contradict, ‘historical’ (documentary) evidence. This module introduces students to common archaeological methods, practices and interpretative models, and will relate this to the surviving corpus of evidence in Ireland. Most examples will be drawn from medieval Ireland, but the role of post-medieval or ‘historical’ archaeology will also be considered, as may limited evidence from other parts of northern Europe. No previous archaeological experience is necessary.
