HI1211 Britain C.1272-1460: Kingship and Warfare

This modules charts the development of kingship and warfare in England and Scotland, from the beginning of Edward I’s attempts to subjugate Scotland and Wales to the era of a divided England and a securely independent Scotland. Students are encouraged to explore the practical significance and impact of medieval kingship through lectures which focus on the reigns of key rulers in both countries. Tutorials focus on key themes in the period, and may include study of topics such as the development of parliament and the emergence of nationalism.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
- Outline chronologically key events and developments in the political history of ‘Britain’ during the later middle ages
- Discuss the core features of ‘Britain’s’ political history during the later middle ages
- Analyse the impact of political developments in ‘Britain’ during the later middle ages
- Undertake a basic analysis and evaluation of selected primary sources, in translation, relating to aspects of later medieval English and Scottish history
- Present and discuss in written and oral format analysis of key questions relating to the history of ‘Britain’ during the later Middle Ages.
