Research

'Coffee in early modern Ireland'
My research focuses on the introduction of coffee to Ireland during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Physical items such as coffee pots and coffee itself as well as the emergence of coffeehouses in urban topographies are evident during this period alongside social connotations of the drink (including tea and cocoa as well the instruments necessary for the preparation and consumption of coffee). I will assess the degree to which coffee's influence was felt within the social and physical spaces of Irish cities (and particularly, but not exclusively, Dublin) and reasons for this influence.
