Research

‘Precedence and Audience: Sir John Finet and the reception of foreign ambassadors at the court of Charles I, 1628 – 1641’
My dissertation focuses on the work of the Master of Ceremonies, Sir John Finet, with particular emphasis on the treatment of foreign ambassadors. I will examine how Charles I utilised visits by ambassadors to reinforce and redefine his monarchical identity with an ideology that, as I argue, was expressed spatially. The use of space and concurrent questions of access and proximity are the keystones of my thesis.
