Research

'The vice-regal court in Dublin during the reign of Elizabeth I'
Can we definitively say that the lord deputies of Ireland had a vice-regal court in Elizabethan Dublin? Did such an institution even exist? Or, rather, did was there a mere semblance of a court? My research will attempt to answer these questions. In doing so I re-evaluate how existing historiography has considered the lord deputies of Ireland. I will build up a picture of the lord deputies' household, which would have formed the centre of a "court". I will analyse how much they spent and on what, the daily operation of the household, how many servants and horses they had and so on. Then I will analyse the possibility of a court culture surrounding this household by considering patronage and ceremonies. For further study I would like to see how this Irish example fits into a wider European context and framework. Does it change how we think about courts and centres of power? I would also like to chart the development of such a "court" across the early modern period.
