Research
During the long eighteenth century, men and women from Ireland travelled to the Continent to satisfy their curiosity and gain firsthand knowledge about the 'manners and customs' of foreign peoples. To aid their own memories and to share their insights with others, travellers recorded their experiences including ethnographic accounts of their observations and reflections of the diverse peoples and cultures encountered abroad. I will analyse these travel accounts in texts, journals, and letters for aspects of travellers' identities which were reflected within these travel narratives.
