HI7000 Academic Mentoring

Teaching Staff: Students will be assigned a member of the History department as their academic mentor in Michalemas term.
Weighting: 5 ECTS
Contact Hours: 1 hour seminar every two weeks
Assessment: One end of term 3,000 word essay on an approved topic relating to the content of this module.

This module introduces students to a range of historiographical and methodological issues, problems and debates and asks them to engage critically with them in a small group seminar setting. These issues and debates have been selected to allow student to reflect upon the different approaches to historical scholarship that have emerged in diverse historiographical contexts and schools. Students may be asked to discuss their findings by means of seminar presentations, discussions and debates. Students will also present a 3,000 essay on a subject relating to this module after consultation with their mentor.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students should be able to:

  • Identify and critically evaluate a variety of different schools of historical analysis in the light of existing scholarship
  • Develop a critically informed and clearly structured argument that engages with questions of historical method and with interpretation issues in a comparative context
  • Relate the specifics of these questions to wider issues and debates within their discipline
  • Engage in considered debate on questions of historical method
