The following three interlinking strands make up the module Understanding Ireland.

Irish History 1000-2000

This strand of the SSP focuses on a survey of medieval and modern Irish history that explores seminal events, leading personalities, key debates and contested views. Tracing history from the Norman invasions to the conquest of Ireland by Oliver Cromwell through to the 1798 Rebellion, the Great Irish Famine and the Irish Revolution in the early 1900’s, students will gain a deep knowledge and understanding of Ireland in a historical, cultural, and political context.

Archaeology, Art and Architecture

Using historical highlights this strand explores the overlapping influences and impact of archaeology, art and architecture on Ireland from medieval to modern times. Academics will reveal the links between ancient art and national identity with special focus on insular manuscripts and the Book of Kells. Students will learn about Trinity College Dublin’s campus where architectural masterpieces, both historic and modern, coexist, and trace the development of art and architecture through to contemporary Ireland.

Irish Writers through the Ages

Examining the role of writers within Irish culture, politics and society, this strand focuses upon the historical context and a number of key texts by authors such as Swift and Joyce. Students will also learn about Irish children’s literature, Irish film and will be introduced to contemporary Irish writers.
