Student Volunteers from Trinity Celebrate Ten Years of the Suas Educational Development Programme at a Special Screening of Ek Tha Tiger with over 200 School Children in Kolkata
Student volunteers from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland’s leading university, celebrated ten years of the Suas Educational Development Programme in Kolkata recently with over 200 school children along with their parents and teachers who turned out to see a special screening of Yash Raj Films latest release, Ek Tha Tiger. The special screening was hosted by Trinity College Dublin, whose campus formed the backdrop for one of the films key locations along with the hit song, Banjaara. At the event movie goers were introduced to the range of educational opportunities available at Trinity College Dublin, one of Europe’s leading universities and a world leader in many disciplines.
Speaking at the event, Trinity College Dublin’s Vice President for Global Relations said: “Trinity College Dublin is committed to championing change and development in the delivery of education and these volunteers play a vital role in developing our academic impact on both the local and global stage. Trinity College Dublin’s role in Ek Tha Tiger places our historic campus on the world stage. Founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I, Trinity is Ireland’s most prestigious university, ranked 65th in the world by the QS World University Rankings. The university offers students a fantastic range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses where they can benefit from a multicultural student experience. This world class education and vibrant student experience equips students with the skills they need to become the leaders and decision makers of tomorrow, ensuring their success and mobility in an increasingly competitive world.”
Trinity College Dublin student volunteer, Laura Cunningham, commented: “The generosity of spirit within Trinity and the student body is something that permeates the entire student experience. It was this goodwill that really cemented my decision to come to India and volunteer with Suas."
Suas Educational Development was originally founded in 2002 by students from Trinity College Dublin who believed that the best way of making a difference was through education. Each year since, the Volunteer Programme has given young students an opportunity to support the education of children in schools that serve some of the most marginalised communities in India. Acting as teaching assistants in local schools the volunteers have a valuable opportunity to develop their personal and professional skills, such as teamwork, leadership and planning, while learning from this intercultural experience.
