Genetics Student Wins Chinese Government Award

A student from Trinity’s Department of Genetics, Xiaowei Jiang, has been awarded a prestigious Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Chinese Students Abroad.  The award recognises the academic excellence of self-financed Chinese students attending doctoral programs overseas lasting more than one year.

Xiaowei Jiang’s research focuses on the understanding of host-pathogen coevolution under the supervision of Dr Mario A Fares, Lecturer in Genetics.  The research was funded by the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET).  Xiaowei was one of five Chinese PhD students awarded the prize in Ireland.

Established in 2003 by the China Scholarship Council, the awards are granted across all fields of study and reward academic excellence of self-financed Chinese students studying overseas.  The award further encourages international students to return to China for work or to serve the country in other channels after receiving their degree abroad.

The Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad includes a $5,000 US cash prize and a certificate.  Only those students with outstanding performance in PhD studies are considered by the award selection panel.  In total, the award has been presented to 506 Chinese students pursuing study abroad in 29 nations this year.
