Award Winning Bollywood Film Director Visits Trinity College Dublin
Posted on 2 November 2012

Kabir Khan, award winning film director, recently returned to Dublin to hold a Bollywood master class followed by a Q&A session with students and staff from the university. The event was chaired by Professor Kevin Rockett from Trinity's School of Drama, Film and Music.
Mr Khan directed Bollywood blockbuster Ek Tha Tiger which has been seen by over 100 million people worldwide. A large portion of the film was shot in Dublin and the University's campus was the location for Tiger (Salman Khan) and Zoya's (Katrina Kaif) first meeting and the start of a journey that brings them on a rollercoaster journey that takes them from Dublin to Istanbul, Kazakhstan and Cuba.
During the event Mr Khan recognised the Irish education system as one of the best in the world and commented that without compliance from Trinity College Dublin, which is ranked 67th place in the world by the recently announced QS World University Rankings 2012, the film would not have been filmed in Ireland. The university's strong international reputation for teaching and research along with the unique and vibrant student experience on offer to students were some of the reasons for using Trinity as a backdrop as it added a vibrancy to the film. Ek Tha Tiger was the first Bollywood blockbuster to be made in Ireland and features two of Bollywood's biggest stars, Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan, who can be seen dancing in Trinity's cobbled Front Square in the hit song, Banjarra.
Some of the filming on campus can be seen here.
The university's international community has more than 17,000 students from 122 countries and prospective students can choose from over 400 undergraduate programmes and over 200 taught Masters programmes available throughout the three Faculties. In August this year Trinity College Dublin presented Yash Chopra, former head of Yash Rash Films, with an Honorary Professorship at a special event in Mumbai on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Bollywood film. The University was saddened to learn of Professor Chopra's passing and recently paid tribute to the Bollywood legend.
