Seamus O Floinn Research Laboratory
Lung Cancer and Tuberculosis: Addressing Epidemic Killers through Research
Trinity College hospitals treat in excess of 500 cases of lung cancer each year; this is a devastating disease from which only 15% of patients will achieve long term survival. Located in the Trinity Centre for Health Sciences at St. James’s, the respiratory diseases research lab is dedicated to the research of respiratory illnesses to generate better treatments and tests.
The research laboratory houses the pulmonary group, headed up by Professor Joseph Keane, who with his team, is conducting ground-breaking research into lung cancer and tuberculosis and has recently published a new test for lung cancer in Nature Medicine.
The laboratory was named after a distinguished Trinity alumnus, the late Seamus Ó Floinn, M.B., M.A. (1960), following a generous bequest and successful alumni appeal.
The €87,000 currently raised will enable the group to appoint a lab manager to allow senior investigators to concentrate on research rather than administrative duties. The laboratory needs €250,000 over four years.
