Equality Fund 2011-2012

2011-2012 Allocation

The College Equality Fund received 21 applications from staff and students for equality projects to be developed in 2011-2012.

The Equality Committee selected 9 staff and student projects for funding in 2011-2012, with a total allocation of €11,825.

The Equality Fund Sub-Committee membership was comprised of: Dr Nicola Marples (Chair), Ms Louise Power, Ms Louisa Miller, Mr Maurice MacBride, Mr Martin McAndrew and Ms Karen Campos McCormack (Secretary).

The themes for the 2011-2012 call were:

Projects details

Pathways transition assessment and planning tool

Department/Society: Disability Service
Theme: Facing the challenges: supporting creative solutions
Dates: January- August 2012

Details: The Pathways Transition Tool is a companion programme to the Pathways website www.tcd.ie/pathways-to-trinity and the Pathways Outreach project. The Pathways Transition Tool will provide a web-bases assessment and planning resource for second level students with disabilities preparing to start College, thus facilitating access and participation in College.

Student Parents: challenges and strategies

Department/Society: Students in Sociology and Social Policy, Equality Office, DUGES and Mature Student Society.
Theme: Listen, speak and be heard
Dates: Jan-May 2012

Details: This project seeks to research the experiences of student parents in College to find out about their challenges and needs. There is little information about student parents in College and this group face significant challenges in participating in College, particularly in current conditions. It is hoped that the findings of this project will help give visibility to student parent issues, provide networking opportunities and help College better support student parent participation.Two current student parents are leading this project.

Siren (magazine for International Women’s Day)

Department/Society: Students from Law and English
Theme: Listen, speak and be heard.
Dates: March 2012

Details: A special edition glossy magazine to celebrate International Women's Day on 8 March 2012. This will be a feminist magazine written by male and female student contributors on a variety of topics: health, beauty, politics, interviews, advice, sex and culture etc. The magazine aims to be fun, inclusive to all members of the College community and to promote awareness of gender equality.

The Confessional

Department/Society: Trinity Arts Festival
Theme: Listen, speak and be heard
Dates: February 2012

Details: This project will have a moving 'confession' box on different campus locations in the week preceding the Trinity Arts Festival (TAF), providing a forum for people to write down a confession and create an (anonymous) installation for the festival. The project seeks to be a facilitator for students and staff to share experiences and promote participation in College life.

Communication project

Department/Society: CAPSL, Office of the VP, Clinical Speech and Language Studies
Theme: Listen, speak and be heard
Dates: Jan- May 2012

Details: The aim of the project is to create a website that will provide knowledge and skills for all students and staff about effective communication. The website and podcast resources will be of particular usefulness to those whose communications skills are less effective for a variety of reasons, including speech and language problems and will provide practical communication solutions.

Your  5 a day for Mental Health

Department/Society: Unilink Service and Students' Union
Theme: The Campus Community of the Future
Dates: Jan- May 2012

Details: The project will explore the five evidence-based ways to mental wellbeing and their application within the College community through the use of focus group meetings with staff and students . Following the focus groups this information will be developed into a resource promoting positive mental health.

Creating a more Inclusive Campus

Department/Society: Trinity Vincent de Paul Society
Theme: The campus community of the future
Dates: Thursday 12-2pm (weekly throughout term) 2011-2012

Details: The project centres around the integration of students from NIID programmes into everyday College life. It provides an opportunity for interaction between volunteer students and students from NIID with a range of weekly activities on and off campus. Engaging in these activities will be beneficial to NIID students in being more involved in the wider College community and also to the student volunteers.

Respecting diversity in the campus community of the future - CANCELLED

Department/Society: School of Nursing and Midwifery
Theme: The campus community of the future
Dates: 2011-2012

Details: This project seeks to provide a space for dialogue about inclusivity in College and tohelp build a community grounded in respect for individual diversity. NIID students on the Certificate in Contemporary Living and students from mainstream courses will participate in 'culture circles' following the approach espoused by Paolo Freire. Both circles will then be brought together in combined circles to exchange ideas and develop proposals on how Trinity College could be more inclusive. The circles will run over 12 weeks.

Launching the Parlour: peer-led mental health and wellbeing space

Department/Society: Student2Student and The Parlour Project.
Theme: The campus community of the future
Dates: 2011-2012

Details: This initiative will mark the beginning of an ongoing collaboration between Student2Student and the Parlour Project to develop a peer-led student mental health and wellbeing space and service on campus. The Parlour space in Goldsmith Hall will be re-furbished and re-launched as an inclusive wellbeing area with a variety of projects and weekly events focussing on mental health. This is a student-run space that will provide a drop-in point of contact and access to College supports as well as being a space for students to relax.
