Documentary Screening: Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women WorldwideDetails: Inspired by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s book, this documentary introduces women and girls who are living under some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable – and fighting bravely to save them. The event, organized by Medical Students for Choice, Ireland, will focus on two themes of the Half the Sky Movement: maternal mortality and gender-based violence. The screening will be preceded by a discussion where platforms for change will be explored.

Guest speakers Farah Mokhtarezadeh and Tara MaddenDetails: This event will both launch the new Trinity Global Development Society and mark International Women's Week. Farah Mokhtareizadeh is a PhD candidate in Islamic and gender studies. She will draw on her decade long experience working on international solidarity campaigns in South Asia (Afghanistan), MENA (Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Morocco), North America and Europe (Ireland). Farah holds a M.Phil from Trinity in International Peace Studies, and a BA from the University of Pennsylvania in Modern Middle East Studies. Tara Madden is the Front Line Defenders Programme Manager. Front Line Defenders is the International Foundation for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders. Front Line Defenders was founded in Dublin in 2001, with the specific aim of protecting human rights defenders at risk, people who work, non-violently, for any or all of the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Front Line has extensive connections to Human Rights workers throughout the Middle East, and Ms.Madden will provide Trinity Global Development with some cases of women human rights defenders working in the region.

Prof Nancy Hopkins: Approaches to Equality for Women Faculty in Science: Changing Institutions, Changing Individuals – Lessons from the MIT StoryDetails: Lecture by Professor Nancy Hopkins, Amgen, Inc. Professor of Biology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Introduction/Chair: Prof Linda Hogan, Vice Provost, TCD Professor Nancy Hopkins will discuss her work as an advocate for women in science over almost two decades since her appointment in 1995 to chair the First Committee on Women Faculty in the School of Science at MIT. At that time only 1 in 12 faculty members in the MIT School of Science were women. A summary of her committee’s findings published in 1999 came to be known as the ‘MIT Report on the Status of Women Faculty in Science’. This report and the resulting efforts by MIT were recognised by former US President Clinton and are credited with improvements in the status and number of women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in MIT and nationally, as well as inspiring countless initiatives globally.

Thursday 7thGender and Women's Rights in India: A presentation by Gita Jena, Trocaire's Governance and Human Rights OfficerDetails: The Graduate Students' Union and the Laurentian society are hosting Gita Jena from Trócaire. Gita is Trocaire's Governance and Human Rights Officer in India, where she works on gender and women's rights programmes which she manages and helps to deliver in Odisha, India, addressing the wider challenges faced by women in India regards to participation in decision-making and gender-based-violence. It will be a 45minute talk with a presentation, followed by questions at the end. Tea and coffee will be provided.

Christian Exclusiveness - Can we correct it? - Some Personal ViewsDetails: Talk by The Revd Cannon Dr V. Kennerley, Editor of SEARCH, a Church of Ireland journal and Lecturer in Applied (Pastoral and Practical) Theology at Church of Ireland Theological College. Dr Kennerley is also involved in the Women's Ministry Movement and is currently chair of Changing Attitude Ireland (the LGBT rights movement). She will be looking at how Christianity is used as a tool to reject others, but within and without the Christian community, with a special focus on the place of women and LGBT persons in religion.
