Positive Ageing Week 2010

College celebrated Positive Ageing Week from 27 September to 2 October 2010.

Positive Ageing week is a national campaign organized by Age Action to promote a society in which people of all ages enjoy the same status and rights.

During the week staff and students could choose from doing a tour of the TILDA health assessment centre, Sports Centre activities or gardening for Positive Ageing Week at St Odin's Wood with the Civic Engagement Office. Professor Rose Anne Kenny, Principal Investigator at TILDA, also participated in the RTE documentary The End of Ageing, which was aired during Positive Ageing Week and has received very positive commentary.

Holding Together

A special tour of the 'Holding Together' exhibition celebrating 50 years of modern art at Trinity College was held for retired staff. The event received a great response, with an additional tour having to be scheduled to satisfy demand, and over 60 people attending. The tours were facilitated by the Curator of the College Art Collection, Catherine Giltrap, and the Douglas Hyde Gallery. Feedback from participants was very positive, with many welcoming the opportunity to stay involved in College activities and to keep in touch with former colleagues. The tour of the exhibition provided an enjoyable opportunity to explore the history of the College's Modern Art Collection and the contribution made by Prof George Dawson. Pictures of the event can be viewed in the gallery.

Gardening for Positive Ageing Week

Paula Bermingham of Odin's Wood Day Care Centre for Older People said that "The volunteers were a fantastic group of people who were friendly, outgoing and enthusiastic and not a bit afraid of hard work. On behalf of myself and the members of the Day Care Centre I would like to thank you most sincerely for all the hard work and good humour giving our garden a make over on Saturday. Your team were a delight to work with. The members said "It was beautiful to arrive to such an abundance of colour in the garden this morning". The makeover has given both the garden and members a great life."There are photos available to view here www.tcd.ie/community/gallery.

Tour of TILDA: supporting health and successful ageing

The Irish LongituDinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) was launched in November 2006 to study a representative cohort of at least 8,000 people, aged 50 and over and resident in Ireland, charting their health, social and economic circumstances over a 10-year period. To develop an environment for ageing well, we need to characterise the older Irish citizen and explore factors which determine successful ageing. The research carried out by TILDA will help ensure that Ireland meets the needs and choices of its older citizens in a personalized and positive environment.

Gardening in Finglas for Positive Ageing Week

What?

The garden of Odin's Wood Day Care Centre in Finglas needs a little work. The centre caters for people aged 67 to 97 who pay a nominal fee for a variety of services from providing personal care (i.e. showering/bathing etc, chiropody), hairdressing, meals and social stimulation. Activities include painting, arts and crafts, bingo, quizzes and occasional day trips. Transport to and from the day centre is also provided for it members. We’ll be planting, power hosing, cutting grass, weeding and generally getting stuck in. No “green fingers” but lots of enthusiasm? Fine by us! It’s hands on deck for the full day and all gardening materials equipment, soup and sandwiches are included. All you’ll need are gloves and your bus fare. To see photos of TCD Volunteers at work in Odin’s Wood last year, check out www.tcd.ie/Community/gallery.

Why?

The National Day of Volunteering is a unique initiative that concentrates on hands-on involvement and offers volunteers an immediate sense of achievement. Give it a Swirl is all about giving you a small taste of volunteering through a once-off local project. There is no obligation to commit to anything beyond that but you just might discover a real passion for volunteering and decide to get involved further- either way, it's totally up to you. This is a brilliant way to get to know new people, learn a bit about the community and have some fun while getting practical work done for charities and community organisations in need. It’s a win-win situation.

When & Where?

11am on Saturday October 2nd at Odin’s Wood Day Care Centre on Kildonan Road

Those coming from town can meet at 10am at Front Arch. We’ll head up to the top of O’Connell Street and take the 40/a bus out to the Odin's Wood Day Care Centre in Finglas (€1.80 each way- total cost for the day: €3.60). We should finish up before 4pm.

How?

Just sign up. It’s that simple. E-mail mcgrogar@tcd.ie.

Workshop on Setting Up LGBT Staff Networks in third level institutions

14 March, one day seminar

The UCC LGBT Staff Network are planning a one-day seminar on Saturday 14th March 2009, under the auspices of the IUA Equality Network, the aim of which is to bring together speakers from other Irish and UK LGBT staff networks to discuss the issues and benefits around forming such a group. There are many LGBT individuals working in the third level sector but very few supports directly targeted towards the needs of these staff members. LGBT staff networks are proving to be an effective means of establishing a safe communication medium between LGBT staff and employers.

In particular, we are interested in sharing experiences and opinions on the challenges for LGBT staff working within Irish third-level institutions and we would hope to discuss the possibility of forming a national group for mutual help and support.

Would you be interested in attending the seminar and also, would you help us by advertising the seminar to other interested staff in your institution? If so, please contact us at lgbtnetwork@ucc.ie. We look forward to hearing from you. Please note that places at this workshop are limited to 60 and will be issued on a first come, first served basis.

Photographic Awards

15 February 2008

The inter-university awards for the Changing Perspectives: Equality and Diversity in my University photographic competition were hosted by the Equality Authority. This event brought together the four overall prize winners from University of Limerick, NUI Maynooth and Trinity College Dublin. Neill Crowley, Director of the Equality Authority, presented the awards and highlighted the initiative for bringing staff and students together in raising awareness on the diversity of university life in Ireland. The entries were selected for their original and often challenging perspectives on equality, and focussed on diversity (ethnic, religious, sexual), disability, inclusion and exclusion. The inclusion of these photographs in a calendar which has been distributed to over 20,000 students and staff in universities throughout Ireland was particularly welcomed as a means of extending the impact of the initiative throughout the coming year.

Representing Trinity, Dr Kay Inckle (TCD, Social Studies) was awarded the runner-up staff prize, and Madeleine Carrouee (TCD Erasmus History and Politics) was awarded the student runner-up prize.

Bisi Adigun - Anti-Racist Workplace Week Guest Speaker

Bisi Adigun, Director of Arambe Productions, was the guest speaker of Anti-Racist Workplace Week 2007. His talk 'Arambe Productions: Re-imagining the fear gorm in the contemporary Irish imagination' addressed the issues surrounding the representation of the black man in Irish theatre, cinema and television, followed by a lively discussion with the audience. The talk was chaired By Prof Brian Singleton from the School of Drama.

Bisi Adigun discussed the transformation of Ireland and the Irish from being the poor 'black of Europe' (as quoted from The Commitments), to becoming a prosperous country with significant levels of immigration in a short period of time. He highlighted that the complexities of the new diverse Irish society are potentially a great source for drama; but that this was not being reflected in contemporary drama and television, where the black man and immigrants were consistently depicted as outsiders, asylum seekers, criminals or victims.

Arambe Productions was founded to allow black and immigrant actors a voice in Irish theatre and provide a different perspective on Irish society. The company has produced new versions of both Irish drama and traditional African plays over the last few years. Most recently they have produced with Roddy Doyle a new version of the Playboy of the Western World, which has been playing in the Abbey to huge success.

Bisi Adigun highlighted the importance of drama's transformative power, not only reflecting society but shaping attitudes, quoting Bertold Brecht, ''(art) is not a mirror to be held up to the society but a hammer with which to shape it”. Bisi argued further that 'if the perception of most Irish people have of black people is negative, it is important for Irish drama to present another perspective rather than reinforcing these negative perceptions by representing them'.

For further information on Arambe Productions please visit www.arambeproductions.com

Bisi Adigun: originally from Nigeria, he is a playwright and founder of Arambe Productions. He has been living in Ireland since 1996 and is currently completing his PhD in Trinity College.

International Women's Day
8th March 2007

This year's International Women's Day was marked by a number of exciting events throughout Trinity College, celebrating diversity and collaboration between women from arts and sciences.

A Future Leaders seminar featuring Jane Williams of the Sia Group and Martina Harford of the Smurfit Kappa Group was organised by the Centre for Gender & Women's Studies (CGWS)  at TCD to start the day.

The official launch of TCD's celebrations followed this event. The celebrations were launched by Trinity's Vice Provost, Professor Ruth Byrne. Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, Erasmus Smith's Chair of Modern History and Head of the School of Histories and Professor Sheila Greene AIB Professor of Childhood Research delivered a series of short speeches to mark the occasion.

Following the launch, a colourful procession of students performed a dramatic presentation of a selection of statistics on gender equality issues in Ireland.  The students wore items of purple clothing representing the official colour of International Women's Day and performed a range of facts and figures including:  women represent 46% of the labour market; 91% of lone parents are women and 13% of professors in Trinity College are women.

Linking to the International aspect of the day, Professor Jane Grimson, speaking from Front Square, stressed that "education - particularly of girls and young women - is a central element in strategies to lift the least developed countries of the world out of poverty. Trinity is planning to partner with universities in Africa to work towards ensuring that young women there have the same opportunities to avail of higher education as women in Ireland have enjoyed for over 100 years. This will ensure that they can take their full place in society and in shaping their country's future."

The day was finished off by a special screening by the Dublin University Gender Equality Society of the Lilya 4 Ever, which was accompanied by an introductory talk by Jennifer Redmond of the GGWS, on prostitution and trafficking.

International Women's Day was organized by a collaborative team including the Centre for Gender and Women's Studies (CGWS), the Centre for Women in Science and Engineering Research (WiSER), Dublin University Gender Equality Society (DUGES), Music and Media Technologies, Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering and the School of Drama, Film and Music and the Trinity College Equality Officer.

Anti-Racism Week
6th - 12th November 2006

Housekeeping staff on Dining Hall stepsAs part of Anti-Racist Workplace Week, Trinity College's Vice Provost, Professor Ruth Byrne, launched a series of events which will take place throughout the College campus this week, highlighting awareness around the issue. Trinity College has a long history of student and staff diversity, with students from 91 countries spread across the six continents. Many of TCD staff have also traveled from across the world to join Trinity College, with several departments having up to 10 or 12 different nationalities in their midst. This racial diversity includes staff in academic, administrative, technical and support areas.

Vice Provost, Professor Ruth Byrne, stated at the launch of the Anti-Racist Workplace: "The growing internationalisation of our staff and student body reflects Trinity's standing in the world as a leading university, and the increasing globalisation of the educational arena. It also reflects the significant and major changes in Irish society in recent times. The resulting multicultural community in Trinity provides a welcome diversity of experiences and perspectives that is of great benefit to us all."

"A full appreciation of our cultural diversity can enrich our unique Irish experience. Achieving this balance is an important goal for Trinity and part of the university's contribution to our changing Irish society. We are committed to ensuring respect and dignity in the workplace for all our staff and students. This week provides us with an opportunity to celebrate our multicultural community."

The response by Trinity to Anti-Racist Workplace Week reflects its commitment to the new national partnership agreement, Towards 2016, that racism in the workplace will be proactively addressed.

Based on a theme of 'Integration in the Workplace,' the College has devised events which highlight issues directly relating to racial integration such as a series of focus groups entitled Working in a multi-cultural environment; Handling Racism Issues; Diversity in the Workplace for supervisors, and those who are directly involved in handling issues of racism in the College. The Irish Congress of Trade Unions will be presenting its Workplace Initiative for Employee Learning and Development which focuses on skills for the workplace, diversity and equality, and English language training for staff. In addition, the catering department in the College will be providing an international dish every day during the week.

The Chief Executive Officer, of the Equality Authority, Niall Crowley is also a guest speaker on Tuesday (November 7), presenting a seminar on the 'Integrated Workplace' to both staff and students in the College. This week also marks the launch of an Inter-University Equality and Diversity group, of which Trinity College is a member. The group is a collaborative group comprising all seven universities which meets regularly to discuss issues around racism, and equality. This is an exciting opportunity for the College to develop the inter-university agenda, and participate in shared learning and best practice.

At the end of the week's activities in Trinity, its newly appointed Equality Officer, Karen Campos McCormack, along with the Staff Office's Personnel Officer, Louise Power will be reporting to the Equality Committee in relation to the activities and outcomes of the Anti-Racist Workplace Week with a view to formulating an action plan for the coming year. The Equality Committee is responsible for the promotion of diversity and equality in College.
