Technology and Art

Much of the work in audio acoustics and speech localisation has forged collaborative links with the School of Film, Drama and Music as has the work in digital video and film processing. The application of modern audio and video technology, both hardware and software, has had a major impact in the performing arts and the entertainment industry and work carried out in the department has made a significant contribution to this. The Department has also been involved in research into intelligent materials and smart clothing which also have a useful place in modern society.

Gender and Social Studies

In today’s modern climate of rapid technological change, it is essential to be aware of the effects of this development on society in general. Electronic Engineering has been a major contributing discipline to this social development, the influence of which has not only been technical but has had social, political, ethical and legal implications also. A small amount of the research in the department has examined some of these issues. The Department is also fortunate in having a healthy gender balance among its academic staff and there is a number who have collaborated with the Centre for Women and Gender Studies and the Centre for Women in Engineering and Science Research, WiSER, and participate in their activities.
