Overview
The ATRL is an interdisciplinary, postgraduate research centre of the School of Drama, Film and Music at Trinity College, Dublin, designed to explore the emergent fields of creative art practice and new technologies. ATRL senior scholars and postgraduate researchers will innovate unique practical methods while pursuing critical, historical and theoretical research in order to engage future art forms of digital culture that are networked, interactive, multimedia, hybrid, virtual, immersive and ubiquitous. ATRL draws on the synergies of the School of Drama, Film and Music's performance and timebased disciplines to re-imagine film and video, music and sound production, and theatre, dance, live art and installation in a digital environment. In collaboration with the Schools of Computer Science and Engineering, ATRL brings the scientist, engineer and artist into dialogue to offer the widest range of experimental opportunities and academic rigor in the practice and study of digital culture and the arts.
Structured PhD in Digital Arts Technologies
A four-year structured doctoral research-training programme designed to enable students to carry out research in the arts and humanities at the highest level using new media and computer technologies.
Academic/Industry/Community Outreach
ATRL seeks to create meaningful collaborations and community outreach programmes across various third level institutes, local communities, arts organizations, and industries of Ireland and international partners. The goal is to encourage an exchange of the science, engineering, educational and arts communities.
Facilities
ATRL is housed at the Trinity Technology and Enterprise Campus and its development was funded by a capital grant from the Higher Education Authority of Ireland. The 650 square metre Centre contains a multi-use high-tech performance space with sophisticated high-definition digital video systems, advanced surround sound technology, and state of the art audio and video workstations using AVID, Final Cut Pro and Pro Tools, recording facilities, post-production suite, and teaching and seminar rooms.
