Course Details

This innovative M.Sc. in Disability Studies provides a common ground for the inter-disciplinary study of disability in Ireland. This M.Sc. is likely to comprise a student body coming from the private and public sectors including:

  • Disability service providers in middle and senior management positions
  • Disability activists and members of advocacy organisations
  • Policy makers in the private and NGO sectors
  • Graduates from the Social sciences, Education, Political sciences, Humanities, Law, and Applied Health Sciences with an interest in the disability field.

The programme provides students with a deep understanding of disability from social, historical, cultural, economic, and political perspectives. Graduates of the M.Sc. will be equipped with the knowledge, analytical skills, and perspectives to promote change in the field of disability both nationally and internationally. Students in the M.Sc. are part of the distinct and vibrant academic setting of Trinity College Dublin and benefit from the input of the different Schools involved in the M.Sc. This programme is part of the educational programme of the National Institute for Intellectual Disability that also offers the Certificate in Contemporary Living. This unique feature of the M.Sc. provides students with the opportunity to participate in a diverse educational experience through engagement with other students who have intellectual disabilities.

Admission Requirements

Applicants are required to hold at least an upper second class honors degree (e.g., in Social sciences, Education, Political sciences, Humanities, Law and Applied Health sciences). Non-EU applicants will be required to hold an equivalent to an upper second class honors degree in the areas listed above or related or equivalent qualification.

 

The following will be required as part of the application:

  • 2 reference letters (at least one academic)
  • CV
  • Statement of purpose addressing the following (1,000 words):
  1. Your interest in the MSc in Disability Studies at TCD
  2. A research topic in the area of disability you would like to examine in your dissertation
  3. Expectations of the programme in your career development
  • Personal interview
