Smarter Travel
Trinity is working with the National Transport Authority to make Smarter Travel easier for staff and students. We aim to make walking, cycling, using public transport or car pooling a simpler option for people.
Launch
Come to the launch of Trinity’s new Smarter Travel initiative on Thursday 10th of November at 1pm on Front Square and find out how easy and of course cheap it is to travel to College on foot, by bike, on public transport or by car pooling.
At the launch, you could WIN a beautiful reconditioned BEAR Bicycle donated by GreenAer on Pearse Street who provide bikes and e-bikes but also do a great bike repair service too. Anyone who attends the launch can win the bike. It'll be raffled at the launch.
There’ll be lots of things going on on the day. There'll be stands promoting smarter travel and you can get information about the activities that are being planning during the year to get people using smarter travel options. Provost Dr Patrick Prendergast, the Lord Mayor of Dublin Andrew Montague and the President of the Students’ Union, Ryan Bartlett will speak briefly about the Smarter Travel Initiative and Trinity College’s involvement in it. The winner of the Felt Bike donated by EuroCycles and the voucher for two for Restaurant 1592 will also be announced.

Facilities
Before the end of 2011, Trinity is installing approximately 40 additional Sheffield Hoops under the viaduct at the Sports Centre. This should provide about 80 extra parking spaces for bikes in that area.

Trinity's own Prof. Iggy McGovern (School of Physics) wrote this poem about bicycling!
O Lord, preserve me on my bike
From theft and from insurance hike
From all the motoring Sons of Psych
From buses to (and from) Klondyke
From joggers powered up by Nike
From prams containing someone’s tyke
From potholes, tramlines and the like
From wind and rain and lightning strike
From glass and nail and marlin spike
From dog and cat and crow and shrike
Preserve me, for the love of Mike!

Cycling and Heavy Goods Vehicles
Big trucks and little bikes don’t always mix. Check out this video by the Road Safety Authority about how to keep yourself safe on your bike.
This leaflet by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council also has some useful information in it. http://www.dlrsportspartnership.ie/images/docs/Bike_Week_brochure.website.pdf
