Diploma in Highway and Geotechnical Engineering

Overview

This one-year postgraduate course is designed to enable graduate engineers acquire a sound knowledge of current practice in highway, traffic and geotechnical engineering. The course is suitable for engineers involved, or wanting to become involved in the provision, maintenance and operation of highways, and has been CPD accredited by the Institute of Engineers Ireland. Material is presented in a number of modules, outlined below.

Course organisation

Lectures, laboratory practicals and site visits are normally held on Friday evening 7 - 10 p.m. and Saturday morning 9.30 a.m. - 12.30 p.m. each week throughout the two semesters (September to April.) In addition to attending lectures, participants may be required to submit coursework as part of the students' assessment.

Entry Requirements

A degree in Engineering or related discipline is required. Applications are assessed based on academic qualifications, together with the number of years of relevant experience.

  • Highway planning and programming, including transportation / highway economics
  • Transportation modelling
  • Traffic engineering and highway safety
  • Pavement management, including design of new flexible and concrete pavements
  • Maintenance / rehabilitation of existing pavements and highway asset management systems
  • Geotechnical Engineering, including design of earthworks, soil stabilisation and construction on soft ground
  • Construction law, including types of contract and contract documents
  • Construction management, including plant selection, cost control and quality assurance
  • Computer Applications and Laboratory work
  • Environmental Assessment
Assessment

Examinations are held in April/May, with Supplemental Exams held in September. Coursework, which is done throughout the year, may contribute towards the overall assessment.

Extensive notes are provided by individual lecturers, who may also recommend texts.
