Civil Engineering student wins the Irish Undergraduate Awards (Environmental & Geosciences category)

John Murtagh (SS student 08/09) has won the Irish Undergraduate Awards (Environmental and Geosciences category) for his final year project entitled, “The use of strobe UV light in the disinfection of water.” This project investigated how waterborne microbial contaminants could be killed by the use of intermittent flashes of sunlight and has made a significant contribution to the ongoing research being led by Laurence Gill which aims to produce a low cost, appropriate technology village-scale water treatment system for application in sub-Saharan Africa. The award will be presented to John at a special ceremony on 1st November in Dublin’s Shelbourne hotel.
