CRC Annual Lecture

The Children's Research Centre's Annual Lecture was delivered by Professor Susan Golombok, Director of the Family Research Centre, University of Cambridge, to a packed house in the Davis Theatre TCD on 9 December 2008. Professor Golombok's topic, 'Non-traditional families: What do we know about their effects on child development?', was based on her extensive research on families formed by various types of assisted reproductive technology and research on same sex parents and their children.

10,000 Infants in 'Growing Up in Ireland' Study

On 11 September, 2008 the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Barry Andrews launched the rollout of Growing Up in Ireland – The Infant Cohort, marking the beginning of research with 10,000 nine-month-old infants and their parents from across Ireland. The aim of the study is to paint a full picture of children in Ireland today and to understand what factors affect children's development and wellbeing. The study is conducted by a consortium led by the ESRI and TCD.

'Trinity Takes to the Streets'

On 26 October 2009 Trinity students, alumni, staff and friends are taking to the streets of Dublin for the Dublin City Marathon. We're aiming to raise funds to support College initiatives addressing educational disadvantage in Dublin and beyond. Many of these projects are groundbreaking and have received international recognition for their effectiveness - all of them are worthy and in need of funds.

Wii and Children's Fitness

A study examining the energy expended by children, including children with cystic fibrosis and obesity, when playing Wii Sports and Wii Fit is underway in the Department of Physiotherapy. Previously linked with inactivity among children, the potential of new activity-promoting video games to get children exercising is becoming increasingly evident.

'Young People's Homeless Pathways'

The Homeless Agency and the Children's Research Centre launched 'Young People's Homeless Pathways' by Paula Mayock (CRC), Mary Louise Corr (CRC) and Eoin O'Sullivan (School of Social Work and Social Policy) on 18 December, 2008 in the School of Nursing. Children's Bookmarks Programme

The 2009 Bookmarks Programme, aimed at encouraging children to create their own adventure stories and make their own books, was launched by children’s author, Aubrey Flegg, in Trinity College on 30 January 2009. The Bookmarks Programme is a joint project of the Trinity Access Programme (TAP) and The Ark, A Cultural Centre for Children, and includes of a series of workshops on story writing, illustration and bookbinding, designed, developed and presented by The Ark.

'Ireland Challenged: Active Citizenship in Context'

Trinity Volunteers Opportunities Forum (TVOF) hosted a public lecture in December on the life of Frederic Ozanam (Founder of the St. Vincent de Paul) on 3 December, 2008. The lecture, examining the relevance of Ozanam's ideas for modern Ireland, was delivered by renowned author and Vincentian historian, Dr. Thomas McKenna.

Computer Science Workshops in Bridge2College

The School of Computer Science and Statistics piloted a week long series of computer science workshops for second level students in December. The workshops, which will continue in March, combine elements of the Transition Year programme run by the School with elements of the successful model run by the TCD Bridge to College programme in TCD and are exciting examples of innovation in attracting students to study computing.

Trinity Immigration Initiative (TII) lecture

Organised by the Trinity Immigration Initiative in December 2008 Professor Ingrid Gogolin gave a lecture entitled, 'Migration, integration, educational success: lessons (not) to be learned from 'old' immigration countries.' Professor Gogolin is internationally renowned for her research on the educational integration of children and adolescents from migrant backgrounds.

Award for Trinity ADHD Research

Collaborative research investigating the relationship between genetics and psychology of children with and without Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has been judged by an international jury of the European Psychiatric Association as the best in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry in Europe in 2008. The research findings were published in the American Journal of Medical Genetics this year.

Launch of 'Supporting LGBT Lives'

'Supporting LGBT Lives: A study of the Mental Health and Well-Being of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people' by Paula Mayock, Audrey Byran, Nicola Carr and Karl Kitching, was launched on 2 February by the Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney T.D.

Study into New Irish Family Structure

The reasons behind the changes in the structure of Irish families since the 1970’s will be examined in an in-depth study by Dr Margret Fine-Davis of Trinity College’s School of Social Sciences and Philosophy. The study, entitled 'Changing Gender Role Attitudes and Behaviour: Implications for Family Formation in Ireland', is the first of its kind in Ireland and will be funded by the Family Support Agency.

Oral Health and Disability

An HRB funded project in the Dental School and Hospital is using novel technology to capture and secure data in a study comparing 0 to 6 year olds with a diagnosed disability in the North-East with those in the South-East. A second study, funded by the Department of Health and Children, looks at developing oral health indicators, to comply with the requirement under the 2005 Disability Act to have a needs assessment.

Trinity Med Day 2008

Trinity Med Day students were joined by Jamie Heaslip, Leinster and Irish International Rugby player to launch the well known college charity fundraising day which took place throughout Dublin on 7 November, 2008. The students raised in excess of €55,000. The Centre for Cardiovascular Risk in Younger Persons, AMNCH Tallaght, the Acute Stroke Services, St James’s Hospital and the Trinity Access Programmes were co-beneficiaries of the day.
