BU3570a Human Resource Management

(5 ECTS credits)

Module Content/Outline:

Human Resource Management (HRM) sets out to describe the professional area of work that is concerned with managing employees in work organizations. HRM is described in academic terms from historical, organizational and professional perspectives. The module secondly, contextualizes the practice of HRM in the Irish employment law and industrial relations environment. Thirdly, it expands upon the activities of HRM in organization: staffing, training evaluation, compensation, welfare and employee relations setting out how they contribute to organizational outcomes/ business strategy. Finally, it discusses how HRM is delivered and/or managed in organizations.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of part (a) of the module students should be able to:

  • Define the concept of HRM, assess its history and deduce its objectives in modern organizations
  • Clarify and appraise aspects of the Irish legal and Industrial Relations environment in which HRM is enabled
  • Classify and assess the operational activities or practice tool-kit which comprises the HRM activity in organizations

2 Lectures per week, 3 Tutorial during Michaelmas term

Assessment:

Course work assessment for part (a) of the module
Tutorial homework and presentations
Essay: 2500 word essay 20%

Dates for submission:

Essay: End of module

Penalties for late submission:

Students unable to submit a term assignment for medical reasons must produce a medical certificate to the School of Business Studies office within three working days of the missed submission date. Certificates received after that time will not be accepted.

Examination:

1 x 3-hour examination across (a) and (b) 60%

 

BU3570b Human Resource Management

Module Content/Outline:

Human Resource Management (HRM) sets out to describe the professional area of work that is concerned with managing employees in work organizations. This module will review the core human resource practices and practice bundles necessary for effective implementation of Human Resource Strategy in work organisations. A managerial/process consulting perspective will be adopted coupled with an action learning, problem focused approach to learning.

The module will comprise formal lectures and a problem focused project. The group project, which will mirror the module content, will require you to design a human resource strategy for an identified “people related business issue “in a company of your choice. Through this action learning approach, you will implement and test Human Resource theory in a practical setting.

On successful completion of part (b) of the module students should be able to:

  • Apply  an analytic problem solving approach to design and develop human resource strategies
  • Evaluate  the circumstances under which different HR practices/ practice bundles will be utilized in organizations to deliver business and HR strategies
  • Distinguish the role and examine the competencies required to deliver HR management in organizations.

2 Lectures per week, tutorials throughout the semester to support the project.

Group Project to design a Human Resource Strategy: value 20%
