BU3551 Organisation Theory

Module Content/Outline:
“There is nothing so practical as a good theory” (Kurt Lewin).
BU3550 offers an introduction to organisation theory through (a) study of the major ‘schools of thought’ in organisation theory and (b) application of theory to case analysis. The course focus will be on critical analysis of theory and linking of theory and practice in organisational analysis.Lecturer:

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
- Identify and explain the major ‘schools of thought’ in organisation theory
- Critically analyse and assess the contributions of the major theories to organisational analysis.
- Analyse organisational cases and your own organizational experience
- Draw conclusions from your analysis.

The module will draw from a diverse range of sources. However, the following texts will be useful throughout the course:
Organization Theory: Modern, Symbolic, and Postmodern Perspectives. Mary Jo Hatch and Ann L Cunliffe;
Organization Theory and Design. Richard L. Daft, Jonathan Murphy and Hugh Willmott.
Assessment:
One individual 2500 word essay (Michaelmas) (20%)
One group 5000 word case analysis (Hilary) (20%)
Dates for submission:
Week 10 each semester
Penalties for late submission:
5% of each working day late, or part thereof.
Students unable to submit a term assignment for medical reasons must produce a medical certificate to the School of Business Studies office within three working days of the missed submission date. Certificates received after that time will not be accepted.
Examination:
3-hr examination (60%)
