BU3550a Organisation Theory and Change

(5 ECTS credits)

Module Content/Outline:

Organisation Change, introduces organisation development (OD) and helps students to understand the processes of working with change in organisations.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

  • Have been introduced to and reflected on the theory and practice of organisation development (OD) as an applied behavioural science approach to planned organisational change, with particular reference to organisational diagnosis and intervention, and the role of the OD practitioner
  • Describe some theories of change and how change takes place at different areas of organisational life - human processes, techno structural, hrm, strategy
  • Have a foundation in how to intervene in an ongoing system to help change take place.

1 2-hour lecture per week, 1 weekly seminar with assigned work

Students unable to submit a term assignment for medical reasons must produce a medical certificate to the School of Business Studies office within three working days of the missed submission date. Certificates received after that time will not be accepted.

BU3550b Organisation Theory and Change

Module Content/Outline:

BU3550b offers an introduction to organisation theory using four organisational frames as vehicles for understanding theories and conducting organisational analysis.  The module is concerned with using theories of organisation and organising to explain what is going on in organisations, and why. The specific focus is on understanding and explaining one’s own organisational experience. Participants will be asked to apply theories of organisation to the analysis of organisation case studies drawn from the literature, current organisational events and their own organisational experience.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

  • Identify and explain the major ‘schools of thought’ in organisation theory
  • Use frames as tools to categorise major schools of thought in organisation theory and to frame and reframe your own organisational experience
  • Analyse organisational cases and your own organizational experience
  • Draw conclusions from your analysis.

Recommended Texts/Key Reading:

Bolman and Deal (2008) Reframing Organizations: Artistry, Choice and Leadership.  This text is available in the library and in Hodges Figgis.

One group essay – 40% of (b) (20% of module total)
