BU1530 Quantitative Methods for Business 2016-17

(10 ECTS credits)

Lecturer: Professor Brian Lucey
Tutor: Ms. Pia Helbing

Email: blucey@tcd.ie

Module Description/Content

This 2 module course is a first course in statistical and data analysis for business students. It is NOT a mathematical course, nor do we dwell strongly on the theoretical or other underpinnings of statistics. Rather it is a course which provides a broad overview of the main topics of data analysis – descriptive and inferential statistics, panel and time series analysis, data visualisation and data skepicism – which you will require in businesses.

Learning and Teaching Approach

We will have one 2 hour lecture block and 1 tutorial hour per week. In the plenary lecture, I will provide an outline of the issue under examination and discuss the business and economic usages and abuses of the topic. In the tutorial, Ms Helbing will outline how the issue can be addressed in Excel.  Occasional other packages may be addressed. We will also have an extensive visiting speakers programme, with speakers from industry outlining how the topic under discussion is used in a real-life setting. A self guided self learning online package STATLAB accompanies the course text and students would be well advised to work their way through same.

Learning Outcomes

Having successfully completed this module, the student should be able to apply the tools of statistical analysis covered to make informed business judgements, and to critically analyse the presentation and utilisation of statistics in business settings.

Recommended Texts/ Required Readings

This is available from Hodges Figgis. Click here to view. Material not covered in the text will be guided by readings.
