Module 2 - Understanding The Environment

 

Economics For A Global Market

Having successfully completed this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand how economists analyse current economic problems
  • Describe how different economies perform
  • Evaluate how economic policy decisions impinge on business and on general living standards 

 

Business in Society

Having successfully completed this module students should be:

  • Sensitized to the diverse set of issues involved in the business – society relationship and debate
  • Familiar with the academic literatures underpinning the different perspectives held within the debate
  • Able to understand the role of Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility in modern business
  • Equipped to question and critically evaluate the impact of business activities and behaviour on society
  • Able to differentiate between the market and non-market issues involved in building a firm’s strategy

 

Management And Organisations

Having successfully completed of this course, students should be able to:

  • Explain the evolution and current status of the work and role of the general manager
  • Describe and analyse the main functional areas of the organisation
  • Discuss how modern organisations have evolved and continue to evolve, and parallel developments in theory
  • Characterise different organisation types with their respective contexts, structure sand management styles, and explain their characteristics, strengths and weaknesses

Organisational Behaviour

Having successfully completed this course, students should have:

  • Developed their theoretical knowledge about the field of organizational behaviour
  • Related the study of organizational behaviour to the goals and tasks of management
  • Been provided with an integrated understanding effectively combining theory and application
  • Acquired understanding of, and options for dealing with challenges typical of organizational life
  • Acquired techniques for improving organizational performance through the better use of human resources and effective management practice
  • Developed their ability to critically analyse, assess and act consistent with the managerial and organizational theories at the level of the individual, the group, and the organization

 

Accounting & Financial Management

Having successfully completed this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand the key components of balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements
  • Identify the deficiencies in accounting statements and understand the impact of accounting standards on them
  • Undertake financial analysis of financial statements and identify key trends in performance and financial position of commercial undertakings
  • Understand the importance of and the dynamics of finance in business enterprises
  • Understand the impact of operating and financial leverage on the performance and financial position of business enterprises

 

Corporate Financial Management

Having  successfully completed this course, students should  be able to:

  • Understand key financial concepts in order to view business decisions from a financial perspective
  • Understand the relation between risk and return and the importance of managing this relation in corporate decision-making;
  • Use basic financial mathematics, statistics, excel routines and pricing techniques to value bonds, stocks and other risky assets;
  • Understand the operations of financial markets.
  • Understand the basic elements of investment, financing, capital structure and dividend decision processes;
  • Appreciate recent developments in market efficiency and behavioural finance as they apply to corporate financial management.

 

Quantitative Analysis

Having successfully completed this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand the importance and practical implications of analysis in business
  • Create customer feedback questionnaires
  • Understand sampling and design implications
  • Produce appropriate tables and charts to understand customers
  • Produce and interpret basic statistical results
  • Produce models that help to understand customer types and their behaviour
  • Understand different types of predictive regression models and when to use each
  • Interpret time series forecasting models
  • Produce quality control analysis

 

Entrepreneurship

Having successfully completed this module, students should be able to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of entrepreneurship
  • Independently evaluate the viability of a business plan
  • Create a commercially viable business plan for a new venture
