He is Chairman of the Medical Board of Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital. He has an extensive clinical practice treating disorders of the hip and knee. He is Orthopaedic Surgeon to the Irish national soccer team with extensive referral for sports injuries.Professor OByrne is working with Professor Fergal OBrien on the development on novel biomaterials and surgical devices for cartilage and osteochondral repair. He and Prof. O’Brien are co-PIs on a Eur€1.3 million SFI-HRB Translational Research Award which began in 2012. In addition he is a PI is the new Eur50 million SFI-funded AMBER Centre.
