New Employees or Staff rejoining TCD should send their original Irish P45 to the Salaries and Wages Section, Treasurers Office, 5 College Green and they should contact the Revenue @ 1890 333 425 for a Certificate of Tax Credits to be issued. The payroll office cannot accept photocopiesof P45’s.
Your First Job
If you are commencing employment in Ireland for the first time and have
received your PPS No. you need to fill in a Form 12A (www.revenue.ie).
If you don’t have a PPS (Personal Public Service Number) you can apply
for this at your local Social Welfare Office. They require certain
documents and Proof of Identity to be brought to their offices before
a PPS number can be issued. Please click on link to www.welfare.ie to
get full information regarding the procedures involved in acquiring PPS
Numbers from the Social Welfare. Once you have your PPS No. you can
complete form 12A and send it to your Regional tax office to request
a Certificate of tax credits. This form is available from the Tax Office,
Salaries and Wages office or by download from the Revenue Website.

Applying for a PPS No.
Who has a PPS Number
You already have a PPS No. if you are Irish and:
a. Were born 1971
b. or after Started work since 1979
c. Are getting social welfare payments
d. If are not Irish and have previously registered in full with the Tax Office in Ireland.
All Children are automatically allocated a PPS No. when a claim is made for Child Benefit or when a child is claimed for as a dependant of an adult who is getting a social welfare payment.

What should I do if I do not have a PPS Number?
You should contact your local Office of the Dept of Social, Community and Family Affairs. This office will try to trace a number for you or, in the event of you not having a number, will request one on your behalf.
Allocation of PPS Number
Where a PPS number cannot be traced, the customer should complete a PPS Number Application form (Reg 1) available only at Social Welfare Offices. The information required on Page 1 of the form –“Public Service Identity Data” – is prescribed by law (Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2002, section 12). Proof of Identity is a vitally important aspect of the PPS Number allocation procedure and must be established before a PPS Number is allocated. Presented Documents may be held for checking and applicant’s signature on the form must be witnessed by the officer receiving the application form. The following are the prescribed documents to accompany a PPS Number application.
PPS Number – Non-National
If you are a non-national you must apply for a P.P S. Number from your local Social Welfare Office. The nearest Office to Trinity College is:
Social Welfare Services Office, Apollo House, Tara Street , Dublin 2
This office is open Monday – Friday, 9.30am – 12.00pm and 2.00pm – 4.00pm
PROOF OF ID – IRISH NATIONALS
- Long Birth Certificate
And
- Valid Photographic ID e.g. Current Valid Passport or Full Driving Licence, Employment ID Card Etc.
And
- Evidence of Address
PROOF OF ID – UK NATIONALS
- Long Birth Certificate
And
- Valid Photographic ID e.g. Current Valid Passport or Full Driving Licence, Employment ID Card Etc.
- Evidence of either work/claim/residency/Tax Liability/Education history in the UK or Northern Ireland
And
- Evidence of Address
PROOF OF ID – EEA citizens (EU NATIONALS – (other than UK ) and Citizens of Iceland , Norway and Liechtenstein ) plus Switzerland
- Current Valid Passport or National Identity Card
And
- Evidence of either Birth/work/unemployment/residency/tax liability/education in an EU/EEA country or Switzerland
And
- Evidence of Address In Ireland
PROOF OF ID – NON EEA NATIONALS
- Current Valid Passport or Certificate of Registration with Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Green Book or Plastic Card)
And
- Evidence or either birth/work*/unemployment/residency/tax liability/education in the relevant country (*includes Work Permit or letter from the Dept. of Justice , Equality and Law Reform give permission to work).
And
- Evidence of Address in Ireland
The following will not be accepted as Proof of ID
- Short Version of Republic of Ireland Birth Certificate
- Provisional Driving Licence
- Baptismal Certificate
- Personal Letters
- Photo-copies of certificates
- Savings Accounts recently opened.
The following are acceptable documents showing address:
Household Bill, Official Letter/document, financial statement, property lease or tenancy agreement, verified employer’s letter. All documents must show the applicants name and address.
NOTIFICATION OF PPS NUMBER
In cases where a new PPS number is allocated, the customer will be advised of his/her new number through the issue of a letter of notification sent automatically to the address given on the application form within 3 to 5 working days. This letter is acceptable as proof of one’s number for transactions with specified bodies for public services e.g. health/education/ revenue/ employment/drivers licence.
NB
- There is no point in contacting the Tax Office without this number
- You cannot open a bank account without a PPS number
- Therefore it is imperative that you apply for your PPS number as soon as possible.
- Employees who do not submit a PPS number will pay 41% tax on all earnings
