Student Contribution 2011/12

Undergraduate Students

As a result of measures contained in the budget of 7th December 2010, the Department of Education and Skills has introduced a new student contribution of €2,000 which replaces the existing student service charge of €1,500. This will be implemented from the 2011/2012 academic year onwards.

All students eligible for the Government tuition fee remission scheme (free tuition fees) will be liable for the student contribution of €2,000.  In addition, all students are also obliged to pay a mandatory sports centre charge of €77 and USI membership fee of €8 totalling €2,085.

Students not eligible for the free tuition fees must pay their tuition fee, student contribution of €2,000, mandatory sports centre charge of €77 and USI membership fee of €8.

Those students eligible and approved for a local authority grant will have their student contribution paid on their behalf by their local authority however they are still required to pay the mandatory sports centre charge of €77 and USI membership fee of €8.

Tax relief on Student Contribution

Families with two or more children liable for the new student contribution will qualify for tax relief on payments arising from second and subsequent sibling liability.  Please see Revenue Information Leaflet IT31 (www.revenue.ie/en/about/foi/s16/income-tax-capital-gains-tax-corporation-tax/part-15/15-01-01.pdf?download=true) for further information.
