Statistical input is a fundamental necessity for most quantitative research. The Department and colleagues support this in three ways. These are Training, Clinics and Collaboration.
We recommend those involved in research undertake basic training in statistics. This can be done by participating in the Postgraduate
Diplomas, which leads to a formal qualification or a short course such as the online courses provided elsewhere. We also are in the process of developing an intensive course on statistics, the details of which will be announced here later in 2008.
We also recognise the need for advice at critical times during a project. With this in mind, we have, in partnership with a campus company, developed statistical clinics for researchers. These operate on a self funding basis and the administrative side is completely taken care of off site. Details of this service are available here. These are also suitable for dealing with enquiries coming from the general public or media sources.
Some projects require a large amount of statistical input and expertise. In many cases these require the development of new statistical methodology in order to answer the scientific question of interest. When this is the case, it is appropriate to consider a full methodological collaboration. This may take the form of joint input into the grant application writing process. Typically it is expected that the resources obtained here will support a PhD or postdoctoral level researcher in Statistics. In this instance, it is important to be aware of the research interests of staff in the Department. If you have such a proposal, then you can send an outline, detailing your project, and in particular the methodological challenges you have identified to Cathal.Walsh@tcd.ie
