Future sporting leaders at Trinity
17 young people were given the opportunity to participate in the inaugural 'Junior Sports Leader' programme at Trinity Sports Centre this summer and culminated in a ceremony on Thursday 5 September. It was recognised by the Department of Sport that an opportunity exists for young people from the age of 16 years to gain valuable interpersonal, social and cultural skills via the medium of sports leadership. The participants undertook a comprehensive training programme before being deployed to initially 'shadow' qualified coaches to deliver sports activities for children, and then took responsibility for leading a number of the sessions. The young people showed excellent focus, enthusiasm and skill and it is hoped that this opportunity will be the first step towards leadership opportunities in the future
.
Head of Sport, Michelle Tanner, hosted the participants and their parents at an event where a presentation was made to each of the Junior Sports Leaders. The Department of Sport will build on the success of the 2013 initiative to provide similar opportunities for more young leaders
