Sports Scholarships Awards 2010/2011

Trinity College Dublin Sport Scholarships were awarded to 28 Trinity students at a special ceremony on Tuesday, December 7th last. The scholarships were awarded by Trinity’s Department of Sport and Dublin University Central Athletic Club (DUCAC) in 13 different sports including, rowing, football rugby, running and athletics, camogie, Gaelic football, hurling, hockey, kayak, orienteering, pentathlon, soccer, squash and volleyball.

Commenting on the significance of the Trinity Sports Scholarships, Provost, Dr John Hegarty said: “Trinity continues to support the pursuit of sporting excellence and its Sport Scholarships are an acknowledgement of our students’ exceptional achievements in sporting life.”

The CEO of the Irish Sports Council John Treacy presented the awards to the following Trinity students:

International rower, Sarah Dolan, who competes with the Trinity Senior VIII and rowed in the winning boat that won the National Championships last season. Sarah is a Junior Sophister student in Mechanical Engineering at Trinity and has represented Ireland at senior level in two World Cups and is currently ranked No. 3 in Ireland for lightweight women.  She hopes to be in the top 6 at the under 23 (U23) World Championships this year and to go to the Senior World Championships which is an Olympic Qualifier.

Scott LaValla a Senior Sophister student in Philosophy and Political Science, was awarded a Rugby Scholarship.  Scott is Captain of Trinity’s Rugby Club this year and was selected to play for the Ulster Ravens in the British Irish Cup and for the USA Eagles for the Churchill Cup in 2009 and 2010.  His ambition this year is to gain promotion to the All Ireland League Division 1 with Trinity and to make a Magners League debut.

Pentathlon athlete, Natalya Coyle is a Senior Freshman student in Business, Economics and Social Studies.  She was Intervarsity Tetrathlon Champion and Fencing Champion in the 2009/10 season for the Trinity Clubs and was selected for the Irish Fencing squad for 2010.  She came 14th at the Modern Pentathlon Junior Europeans and  19th at the Mexico World Cup this year.  She hopes to qualify for the World Cup Final in July 2011 and qualify for the London Olympics in 2012.

Tom Brennan is a Junior Freshman Medicine student and was semi finalist in the Junior European 200m sprints for kayaking in 2010 and came 14th at 1000m K4 Junior European Sprint Championships.  His ambition is to make an ‘A’ Final in the U23 European Sporting Championships and a top 10 finish in the U23 World Marathon Championships.

Cadburys continue to support two GAA scholarships in recognition of their commitment to Gaelic football.  This year the scholarships will be awarded to Thomas Corrigan a Senior Freshman in Law.  He was awarded the Ulster Bank Rising Star Award in 2010 and plays for Fermanagh U21, along with the Trinity senior team.  He has two Intermediate County Championship medals with his club.
Sean Murray, is  a Senior Freshman  student  in  Theoretical Physics, and has won an U21 All-Ireland with Dublin in 2010.  He was awarded a Blue Star Award in 2009 and 2010 and plays with the Dublin Senior Panel along with the Trinity senior team.

Sport Scholarship student receives funding and have access to physiology testing, performance analysis and training, sports psychology, health and nutrition advice and lifestyle management support.  Students combine their studies with university, national and international competitions and this support is aimed to help scholarships students achieve their academic and sporting potential while at the University.
