Trinity Regatta

The Sesquicentenary Trinity Regatta which is hosted by organised by DU Boat Club and DU Ladies Boat Club, takes place on Saturday April 16th 2016. This marks the 150th anniversary of the first regatta at Ringsend.
The event is one of the most important sporting events in the Trinity sporting calendar and has been held every year since 1898, with the exception of during the First World War.
Pausing only from 1915 to 1921, the regatta has run every year since 1898 at its current location, on the River Liffey at Islandbridge. The main enclosure is located in, what is now, the Irish National War Memorial Gardens; a picturesque and idyllic spot for watching racing or enjoying the social scene.
Trinity Regatta is the largest annual sporting event in Dublin University, and it is fitting that after 149 successful years it continues to attract the interest of crews and spectators from all over Ireland and the world.
The Regatta features competing clubs and universities from all over Ireland and promises to be a day of exciting entertainment for the 100’s of spectators expected to attend. With crews entered at novice, intermediate and senior level, the Trinity crews will hope to continue their recent success by securing the prestigious trophies on offer.
Some of the trophies up for grabs include The Ladies Challenge Cup, 1898, The Orby Cup (Portadown B.C.), 1969 and the Women’s Novice IVs Trophy. The racing highlights on the day include the DUBC Senior 8+ in the morning, while the afternoon highlights include the DUBC Intermediate 8+ in the semi-final against Queens University Belfast and, at 15.00 there is the invitational race which sees the Defence Forces taking on An Garda Síochána. The afternoon sees the main events and finals scheduled from 15.00 to 18.00 with the DUBC Senior 8+ contesting their semi-final and DULBC Senior 8+ compete in their final.
Speaking ahead of the Regatta, the DULBC captain Jane O'Sullivan and the DUBC captain David Butler said "With an exceptional number of entries across all levels, we are looking forward to a weekend of great racing! We are delighted to welcome crews of all levels from Juniors right up to Masters in Islandbridge this weekend. We would like to extend a warm welcome to our oversear visitors from KSRV "Njord", Leiden University in the Netherlands who will be racing in the Men's and Women's Senior 8+. A big welcome must also be extended to the Irish Defence Forces and the Garda Síochána crews whome are going head-to-head in the exhibition race."
