Academic Appeals
Academic Appeals take place in June and September. There are two levels of appeals: Faculty and College. All academic appeals should be taken first at the Faculty level. If the Faculty does not grant the appeal you then have the option to take the appeal to the College Academic Appeals.
There are three grounds for appeal:
- Case not adequately covered by College regulations
- Regulations not properly applied
- Ad misericordiam
You need to complete the appeal form and send it to the appropriate office. The same appeal form is used in both cases. At the faculty the appeal will be heard by a committee chaired by the Dean with a group staff from the relevant faculty. The tutor and the student will normally be interviewed by the committee.
The College Academic Appeals committee is chaired by the Registrar and includes the previous Senior Tutor, a representative from the Law School, the President of the Graduate Students’ Union and three other members – see the Calendar for their names. The Senior Lecturer and the Senior Tutor are in attendance. Again the student and the tutor are interviewed and the Dean of the relevant Faculty represents the faculty.
An important issue here is that the neither of the committees can change a mark but they can change the consequences.
2012 Dates for Court of first appeal are as follows:
- TSM
- Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences
- School of Law
- BESS
- School of Education
- Health Sciences
- School of Nursing and Midwifery

As tutors are aware, all appeals coming to the Academic Appeals Committee must firstly be heard by the appropriate Court of 1st Appeal within each area. Please contact relevant areas for details of Courts of 1st Appeal (as above).
