Academic Appeals

Appeals for undergraduate students take place in June and September, after the Summer and Supplemental examination sessions.  There are two levels of appeals: Faculty or course (Courts of First Appeal) and College (Academic Appeals Committee).
Cases must go to the relevant Court of First Appeal before they can be heard by the Academic Appeals Committee. If the Court of First Appeal does not grant the appeal you then have the option to take the appeal to the College Academic Appeals.
There are three grounds for appeal:

    1. Case not adequately covered by College regulations
    2.  Regulations not properly applied
    3. Ad misericordiam

You need to complete the appeal form and send it to the appropriate office.  The same appeal form is used in both Courts of First Appeal and Academic Appeals cases. At the faculty/course level, the appeal will be heard by a committee chaired by the Dean or an acting Dean with a group staff from the relevant faculty.  The tutor and the student will normally be interviewed by the committee. For details on the Courts of First appeal, please see http://www.tcd.ie/undergraduate-studies/academic-progress/appeals.php

The College Academic Appeals committee is chaired by the Registrar and includes the previous Senior Tutor, a representative from the Law School, the President of the Graduate Students’ Union and three other members – see the Calendar for their names.  The Senior Lecturer and the Senior Tutor are in attendance.  Again the student and the tutor are interviewed and the Dean of the relevant Faculty represents the faculty.

An important point to note is that the neither of the committees can change the mark given to a specific piece of work but they may alter the consequences of the marks. For options concerning mark changes, please consult the Re-mark/Re-check section (H11§51) of the Calendar at http://www.tcd.ie/calendar/assets/pdf/archive/2012-2013/tcd-calendar-h-regulations.pdf .
