October 7th 1999
A major collection of papers and other material relating to the activities of Dr. Noel Browne's later career has been acquired by Trinity College Library. Among the most significant elements of these papers is the correspondence Dr. Browne received from members of the public and requests for support from the many groups in Ireland committed to the care of people who were ill or marginalised. There are also drafts of speeches and articles and drafts of Browne's autobiography, 'Against the Tide'. The papers are the generous gift of Dr. Browne's widow, Mrs Phyllis Browne, whom Noel Browne, in his autobiography, called a 'social revolutionary'. Mrs Browne is herself the author of a book about her life with No‘l called, 'Thanks for the Tea, Mrs Browne'. Speaking about this latest acquisition, Dr. Bernard Meehan, the Keeper of Manuscripts, at Trinity College Library said, "The papers form an important body of new material and will be available for research consultation once the contents have been organised and listed."
