The following courses are of half-year duration. Students take four courses - two in each half year or semester - and write a dissertation of 12,000 words. the subject of the dissertation is developed and handed in by the end of teaching in Trinity term, i.e. the end of April, in the Junior Sophister Year. The title, an initial chapter structure and a core bibliography are to be worked out in consultation with an appropriate member of staff who will act as supervisor. The dissertation must be submitted by the end of the week following teaching in Hilary term, i.e., in the middle of March in the Senior Sophister year.

Alternatively, students may, with the approval of the Head of Department, take six of the offered courses, three in each half year. Such students do not write a dissertation.
