I. College Scholarship

provost announces new scholars

Scholars are elected annually in various subjects on the result of an examination held in March or April. In one of the most colourful events of the academic year, the names of those elected are formally announced by the Provost from the steps of the Examination Hall on the Monday of Trinity Week.

Scholars are entitled to free Commons (meals in the dining hall) and free rooms in College. They also receive an allowance and are exempt from paying fees.

Candidates must give notice of their intention to take the scholarship examination on the prescribed form, obtainable from the Senior Lecturer's Office, West Theatre, not later than February 1. The traditional time to sit the scholarship examination is in the Senior Freshman Year.

Subject to the approval of the Head of Department, students who achieve at least a II.1 in the Scholarship examination may be exempted from the end of year examination.

Further information may be found in the University Calendar, pp. T5-20.

Junior Sophister

  • The John A. Boland Memorial Prize
Awarded for the best essay written on a theological subject by a Junior Sophister student. Preference may be given to an essay on an ecumenical or inter-faith topic. Value: £700 sterling.

This memorial prize has been established by alumni in honour of the late John Boland (LL.B., M.A., Barrister-at-Law, 1954), former Public Trustee, who founded the UK Trust (then called 'The London Trust for TCD') and who was a very loyal graduate serving Trinity in many capacities.

In 1956 John Boland entered the UK Public Trustee Office where he spent his entire legal career. In 1957 he was called to the English Bar (Middle Temple). Later, in 1967, he was also called to the Bar by King's Inns, Dublin. His intelligence and professional skill combined with his natural charm, courtesy and wit ensured success and in 1980 he was appointed Public Trustee, a position he held for 10 years. From 1987 to 1991 John also served as Accountant General of the Supreme Court.

In reflection of Mr. Boland's strong theological interests, the Prize will be disbursed in the form of an annual prize by The UK Trust for TCD.

The UK Trust for TCD

The Trust is a registered charity in the UK and is the primary means for UK based graduates to support Trinity. It is run by Trustees in a voluntary capacity all of whom are graduates. The Trust plays an important role in supporting projects in Trinity in areas that have included: student fellowships, drama studies and the Trinity Access Programmes.
