Research
The human imagination remains one of the last
uncharted terrains of the mind and a central aspect
of the imagination is the creation of counterfactual
alternatives to reality. Ruth Byrne's work examines
the mental representations and cognitive processes
that underlie deductive reasoning and counterfactual
imagination, to test the theory that imaginative
thoughts are guided by the same principles that
underlie rational thoughts. Methods include
behavioural studies using experimental measures,
computational simulations, and fMRI studies. The
research is carried out in collaboration with
colleagues in Princeton University, IUAV Venice,
UNED Madrid and La Laguna University, Tenerife. It
has been supported by the Irish Research Council for
Science, Engineering and Technology, the Irish
Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences,
Enterprise Ireland, and the Programme for Research
in Third Level Institutions.
