Trinity's M.Sc. in International Politics offers graduate students a combination of rigorous training in the study of international politics with a comprehensive empirical approach to understanding many prominent problems in contemporary world politics, especially topics where domestic and international politics cannot be understood in isolation from each other. These topics include democratisation, international cooperation, development and foreign aid, international conflict as well as the politics of many environmental issues and their implications for the politics of developing countries. Students will also receive training in research methods.

Why Trinity for International Politics? In addition to the international standing of Trinity College, there are three main reasons why students choose to study for an M.Sc. in International Politics at Trinity:

First, students learn in small seminars. Students learn in small seminars. Most of the Department’s M.Sc.seminars have twenty or fewer students. We have welcomed students from across Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia. The Department intends to keep this small size and diversity in the coming years.

Fall on campusSecond, the Department is an internationally recognized centre of excellence for research. All national and international comparisons of research impact place Trinity’s Department of Political Science far above other Irish universities and on a par with the best political science departments in Europe and the rest of the world. For example, a recent comparative assessment of the research output and impact of political studies scholars in Ireland found the Department at the top of Irish universities and on par with the top universities in the United Kingdom. On top of this, a cross-national survey conducted by Professor Simon Hix at the London School of Economics placed the Department in the top three departments of the top 200 political science in the world, when the number of staff was taken into account. The Department also recently received a top European honour in the CHE Centre for Higher Education Development in Germany Excellence Ranking. We encourage students to examine the staff’s records in publishing international peer-reviewed research (see the staff members’ personal pages for details).

Third, this course aims to provide students with the necessary skills for a range of research-related careers in the fields of applied policy research, business, government, law, media, international aid, and international governmental and non-governmental organizations. It also will provide a solid foundation for progress to research PhDs. Reflections from M.Sc. alumni can be found on the alumni profile page and thesis topics are listed on the M. Sc. graduates page.
