Learning Outcomes

After completing this class, students should be able to:

  • Engage with different empirical and theoretical approaches to the analysis violence and political order
  • Develop conceptual, theoretical, and empirical connections across research from political science, international relations, history, sociology, and criminology
  • Compare and analyze variation in types of political violence
  • Understand and articulate the recursive relationship(s) between violence and political order

Module Content


This class will give students a look into the murky and ambivalent relationship between violence and political order. It will deal especially with the less visible forms of violence that accompany political order, such as imprisonment, torture, and even ethnic cleansing. We will read work from history, political philosophy, political science, sociology, and criminology.
